Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about TEF Canada, TCF Canada, and Talk French Canada preparation.

TEF & TCF Canada — The Basics
What is the difference between TEF Canada and TCF Canada?
Both are accepted by IRCC for Express Entry and produce NCLC scores. The main difference is the format: TCF Canada uses multiple-choice questions (QCM) exclusively for comprehension sections, which many candidates find more strategic. TEF Canada uses mixed formats including extended comprehension exercises. Neither is objectively harder — the right choice depends on your learning style and preparation time.
What is NCLC 7 and why does it matter for Express Entry?
NCLC 7 is the minimum French proficiency level required for most Express Entry programs, including the Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Canadian Experience Class (NOC TEER 0 and 1). You need NCLC 7 in all 4 skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. One skill below NCLC 7 disqualifies you — even if the other three are at NCLC 9.
💡 NCLC 7 in French can add up to 50 CRS points in Express Entry, depending on your profile.
What score do I need for NCLC 7 on the TCF Canada?
For NCLC 7 on the TCF Canada: Listening 458–502 points, Reading 453–498 points, Writing 10–11, Speaking 10–11. All 4 must reach NCLC 7 simultaneously.
What score do I need for NCLC 7 on the TEF Canada?
For NCLC 7 on the TEF Canada, you need approximately 310–348 points in each of the 4 sections: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
How long are TEF Canada and TCF Canada results valid?
Both results are valid for 2 years from the exam date. Your scores must be valid at the time of your PR application and ideally through to the final decision. If your results expire before IRCC processes your application, you will need to retake the exam.
Can I retake the TEF Canada or TCF Canada if my score is too low?
Yes. There is no limit to the number of attempts. The only constraint is a mandatory 30-day waiting period between two sittings. Before retaking, we recommend a thorough analysis of your results to target the right skills rather than preparing the same way and hoping for a different outcome.
CRS Points & Express Entry
How many CRS points can I get for French?
NCLC 7 in French can add up to 50 CRS points in Express Entry depending on your profile. Higher levels like NCLC 9+ maximize the gain further. For bilingual candidates (French NCLC 9+ and English CLB 9+), the total bonus can reach 50+ net CRS points — the difference between waiting months and receiving your invitation in the next draw.
💡 The jump from NCLC 7 to NCLC 9 in French is worth approximately 40 additional CRS points.
Which Express Entry programs require NCLC 7?
Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) and Canadian Experience Class NOC TEER 0/1 require NCLC 7 in all 4 skills. CEC NOC TEER 2/3 requires NCLC 5. Federal Skilled Trades requires NCLC 5 for listening and reading, NCLC 4 for writing and speaking. Provincial programs vary — always verify requirements for your target province on their official site.
Preparation & Programs
How long does it take to reach NCLC 7?
From NCLC 6, most candidates reach NCLC 7 in 30–45 days with structured 1-on-1 preparation. From NCLC 5, expect 45–60 days. Self-study alone typically takes 2–4 times longer because there is no corrective feedback on speaking and writing.
